SUMMERY:

For this next tutorial I'm going to be talking about how to monitor in mono all within Pro Tools.

It is important to always check your mix in mono to make sure it will translate well on mediums such as some televisions etc. Not everyone has a system that has two speakers.

The way to do this is to create a Mono Aux Track and name it Mono. You also need to set it to Pre Fader. This way it will still send even if your mix buss is muted which it will be when you monitor in mono. Then Solo Safe it.

Next Go into setup - I/O and go to the buss window and set up a Mono Buss. Call it Mono:

Now most people already have all their tracks going to a mix buss or 2 buss or whatever you like to call it. What we need to do now is set up a buss send from that track (your mix buss) to your new Mono track. Bring the level on that send to somewhere around -3db. You don't want to bring it up full because your combining two signals together.

After you have done this, set the levels for both the Mix Buss track and the Mono Track to be about the same. Now let's look at the Edit Window really quick:

The button highlighted in the pic above allows you to toggle a tracks Solo button and the Mute button in the mix window. Make sure it's selected and go back to the mix window.

Now all you have to do is select both your mix buss track and your mono track and hit mute on one of them. Now hold down the shift key and then hit M and it will toggle between muting your mix buss and your mono track making it easier to quickly switch between listening and checking your mix in both stereo and mono.
