Record To Disk!

SUMMERY:

For this tutorial I'm going to show you how to Record To disk rather than using the Bounce To Disk Function in Pro Tools.

There are a few benefits for doing this.

1.

I believe as many others do that the quality is better. Although this is a controversial topic, I won't go into it.

2.

Let's say you think you have everything in your mix just right and you want to go ahead and bounce it. During the bounce the song reaches three quarters of the way through and you notice something you missed like a track was muted or something like a vocal wasn't loud enough. Anything really. Well instead of correcting it and starting the bounce again from the beginning of the song you can now just pick up where you left off. Just find a good spot to fly it back in and away you go. Saves time and it's not so much of a pain in the ass.

3.

It's easier to compare mixes placing them side by side in your session when there done.

Okay the way we set it up is really simple. Create a Stereo Audio Track and mute it. Next go into Setup - I/0 and go to your bus page and choose/name your send something like "Record".

Now that you have done this on your new Stereo Audio Track, choose Record for the tracks Input.

Next we need to set up a bus send on your Mix Buss or 2 buss Aux Track. Set the level to be 0db. If all your audio tracks and midi tracks etc are all going into your mix buss track then your good to go.

Now when your happy with your mix and ready to Record it, all you got to do is record enable your new Record track, Make sure you mute it and hit record:

When your done you can take it off mute. Solo it and check to see if everything sounds good.

Now to export the file go into your Edit Page. Name and Select your newly recorded track. Open the Regions area to the right. Select your newly recorded track. Click on the arrow at the top right next to where it says regions. Select Export regions as files:

Choose what options you want but make sure you choose Tweak head under Conversion Quality as it sounds best especially when sending to Mastering Engineers. Then just choose where you want to save it and your done.

Note there is no Mp3 option when doing this but there are many free converters out there so it's not really a big deal. I like a program called Switch. You can get it here
